I always thought the egg shell was supposed to make the grounds settle, but apparently not? Does it improve the flavor.
I remember making cowboy coffee at home when I was a broke student, back in the 80s. It tasted pretty good to me. But then, what coffee doesn't taste good!
Well, cece, I don't think the whole eggshell issue has merited serious scientific study, but enough people have used the method that there is likely some merit to it. But maybe it IS a subtle taste thing. You know, I'll bet that you have fond memories of those days when you were a broke student, living in the moment & drinking cheap coffee!
The egg shell thing has historical support however it carrys with it a not so subtle health issue which is of enough concern that I choose not to use raw egg shells.
I once worked in a coffee shop where a whole egg was broken open and dumped shell and all on top of the coffee grounds in the coffee maker basket at the beginning of the brewing.
Wow, Lincoh47! I supposed the cooked egg whites and yolk couldn't get through the filter, but that had to make a real difference in the taste. Sooo, what did you think? Did it improve the flavor of the coffee?
And yes, Summerkid, young and broke was a heck of a lot more fun than old and broke. :)
