Does anyone have experience with college financial advisors? My daughter is a high school junior and is planning on going to college...she is our oldest and we haven't got a clue as to where to start with financing. My husband and I attended a free seminar at the local college given by one of these advisors. They will meet with you one on one for one session free then after that is a fee based service. Anyone have any advice for me?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I see you haven't gotten any responses yet. I think your first step should be to meet with your school's guidance counselor. He or she can help you fill out the FAFSA and work with you on developing your child's resume if you are looking at scholarships. Also the free site called FastWeb has great smaller scholarships. I would personally not pay anyone unless you already have an accountant who handles your finances. There are a lot of people who will rip you off out there.

I will get in touch with the guidance counselor next week. We do have an appointment with the college planner but I will definitely be doing more research and asking more questions before I start writing out any checks!!.
Thanks for your response

If you have any questions about FAFSA let me know, I've filled it out at least 6 times. Not knowing you specific circumstances I can't advise you on what you should do for college counseling.

I was unaware there even was such a title? I started at a local community college and filled out my financial aid paperwork myself. After that I just spoke with a college counselor about the direction I should go.

It wasn't until I worked for a college I knew they have a whole section just devoted to scholarships. At ours it was all listed in a huge book the financial aid office had. Some scholarships are so easy to get you just get selected from an essay you write! But most people don't have a clue about all the financial aid available.

Please talk with the school of choice first because you are already (or will be *wink*) paying them for this knowledge.

Good luck!
