Thanks, Jill, for your timely article. I just returned from a wonderful week on the 'big" island and 5 days in the Kona area. While there we were fortunate to visit Sammie on her 6 acre organic coffee farm in Holualoa. Her beans are sold to Mountain Thunder which is available on line. Sammie is one of 11 female coffee growers who participated in making a "calendar girls" type calender urging the importance of buying only 100% Kona coffee. In most blends with 10% Kona, the added inferior beans are imported specifically to be blended 9 to 1 with Kona beans and, by Hawaiian law, must be fumigated with methyl bromide (a pesticide and toxic material). If you haven't tried 100% Kona you are in for a real treat. Please make sure it's 100% Kona ! Thanks again for a great article. ppinnc
Yes, we quickly discovered a big difference between Kona and "Kona blend" coffees. Certainly there are other great coffees in the world, and some may be less expensive than 100% Kona, but "Kona blend" is cheaper for a reason -- it's not as good.
