A friend gave us this cover for the old satelite dishes(it protected the front of the dish to be transported),the big ones.Because I wanted a little pond w/ a fountain and didn't have the money to buy the ones at the stores. So my husband dug a hole in the yard and put it in.After some river rocks, some plants, and a few feeder goldfish here it is.Will post more pictures when it is totally finished.

I love it too! Still have hubby on the lookout for an older dish. He tried to 'buy' one from a customer, to get it off his property. The man looked at him like he was crazy when he told him "you can make a birdbath out of it". LOL Think I'm rubbing off on him! ;)

Hey! I like that.. The fountain sure makes it cute, too! I have an old fiberglass dish, 10ft.. I'd like to do something like you have.. I think I would at least need to seal the 4 sections where they come together to make it leak proof. Maybe even cover it with a liner?? A question was raised about it maybe the water would get too hot for fish and/or plants..as it wouldn't be very deep... would the fiberglas without a liner hurt fish? What do you think?

Ours has been OK all summer. The thing we used wasn't actually the dish it self,it was the cover they put over the satilite element when in shipment.Ours is around 2 1/2 ft deep in the center. But the mini ponds that you buy like at Lowes sometimes aren't very deep and the are made of black plastic, which I think would get hotter. And with having it in the ground the earth would keep it cooler and the fountain keeps the water moving and that cools it also. Before when we lived in the city I bought a little tykes swimming pool at a yard sale for $2 and just had it setting above ground and the goldfish were fine in that.Although I would lose then in the winter if the water froze solid.Feeder goldfish are just carp, and will adapt to almost anything.plus they only cost a couple dollar a dozen.

Thank You synda. I've thought that about the depth before, same as the little preforms.. I'm going to continue thinking on this and if I ever do it, I'll post something. I have a 1/2 whiskey barrel and an oval stocktank pond at the moment and I just love the sounds in the garden with water trickling. I say I bought "bait" to use as fish in them.. still pretty and they let me pick out the ones I wanted. I always just call the ones that survive, Lucky. lol

About 6 or 7 years ago,the first summer we had the little tyke pool pond..LOL,I went and bought my feeder goldfish and was so proud.Everynight we shut off the fountain and go to bed.The next morning there would be 2 or 3 fish floating,so I'd scoop them out and then turn on the surge bar again for the day.I would whine everyday when my hubby got home from work that more of my fish had died.Well after a week or so of that, one day I went out in the middle of the day just to admire how pretty it was.Well low and behold another dead fish. This time I didn't turn off the fountain, just plopped my hand in to scoop the poor dead fellow out.OH MY GOODNESS I GOT ZAPPED!!!!!So hubby comes home from work and I'm in a panic the pump for the fountain was electrocuting my fish.So we hop in tha car drive 40 miles to the nearest Lowes, where we had bought the pump and got it exchanged. The people at the store could not give me enough,OH WE ARE SO SORRY.So now we drive home and set up the new one, plug it in to the same surge bar.Having to have it completely straight I again stick my hand in the water...ZAPPED again! Here my surge bar had somehow gotten wet and was giving eletric feedback. So I replaced the surge bar and quit executing my fish.To this day my hubby won't allow me to live it down!

LOL, synda! How were you to know? I leave my pumps on 24-7 in the growing season.. I started with 8 goldies and now have the 2 Luckys'. I only found a couple floaters... the day after I released them in there... the rest of the "missing" ones, I blamed on my Missy Kitty... glad we finally found a compatible zone for woman, cat, fish and frogs. I guess I'll bring the luckys in for the winter.. I'm such a softie.
