I live in zone 4 (eastern South Dakota). I first purchased this plant four years ago fully knowing its zone requirements. When the bite of Fall hit...I didn't cut the salvia back but did put a thick layer of leaves over it for the Winter. I was plesantly surprised in the Spring when the salvia came up!! But that year it flowered and that was its last year. So now I won't allow it to flower any more and I'll see how long it lasts. Thanks for the info!!
