SOLVED: Tree with fuzzy buds in October, help ID

Central, AL(Zone 8a)

I noticed this at an estate home in a nearby neighborhood...It had smooth bark and fuzzy buds. When I opened the bud it had a sweet scent. The tree was maybe 30 feet high. Anyone know what this is?

What does the bottom of the leaf look like, is it fuzzy or possibly brownish like a magnolia?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Magnolia of some sort. The commonest in gardens is generally Magnolia soulangeana, though it isn't defintely identifiable as this one from this photo.

Bottom was dull green; here is a pic of what was inside when I sectioned the bud. I didn't post at first because it was blurry...

I have a M.soulangeana in my yard but I compared the leaves and mine has much shorter petioles.
