I live in the hot, dry side of the Island and had solar panels installed two months ago for heating our water. I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am with them, let alone the big difference in our electricity bill. Our water is hot, and we have not as yet had to switch over to the electricity because of cold or rainy days which are few and far between in Kihei.
To make thing even sweeter there is a federal tax credit of 30%, and a State tax credit of 35%, plus a $2,000 rebate from our electric company ( we had the cottage tied in so we qualified for two rebates).
We checked out three different companies before we had a good sense of what was involved and how it was going to be done in our particular set up. Two were large well known companies, but the one we finally chose was a small local company who stand behind their work and come out each year to check the system and clean off the panels, etc, as part of their installation service.
Electricity on Maui is running three times the national average, so you can imagine how happy we are that we have solar!
