OK, some of us on the poultry and livestock forum can be a bit odd sometimes. We all got started on some hatching missions with giving silly titles, and it stuck. Now we keep forgetting our titles. Here is the list, to the best of Commander Moxon's ability. It is in no particular order, and I will edit it to keep it up to date. Please tell me if I forget anybody.

It's not supposed to be military. It's just fun. And besides, the military doesn't have titles like Kitchen Protocol Officer and Mother Bird.

Some people are still choosing their titles...

Commander Moxon when she's hatching
Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Moxon when she's not. Because she is a picky speller, which is petty.

Commander Catscan when she's hatching.
Captain Catscan when she's not.

Lieutenant Major Harmony.

General Dusty (she's just the boss of us all!)

Commander Williams when she's hatching.
Major Williams when she's not.

Commander ZZ when she's hatching.
Mother Bird ZZ when she's not.

Commander Josh when he's hatching.
Captain Josh when he's not.

Samurai Warrior Luvs

Freezer Camp Captain Debilu

Kitchen Protocol Officer Jan

Ninja Dahlianut

Queen Mother Fran

Chief Food Taster to the Queen Mother, BJ.

Commander Jordan when she's hatching.
Captain Jordan when she's not.

Minister of Pastries Brigidlily (or maybe Senior Chef Pastrypuff...she is in 2 minds)

Chief of Covert Operations (CCO) Grownut (usually found under her rock)

Lieutenant Lazy Ladies.

Master Technical Officer (MTO) Musicnotes.

Chief Between (is InnBetween), but we can't call her Chief Between InnBetween because that is way too confusing even for those of us who are admittedly brilliant. Like Catscan.

SilkieChick = Queen of the Fluffed and Furléd Fowl (QFFF)

Chicken Coordinating Officer (CCO) MaypopLaurel

Coordinator of Missing Chickens (CMC) LadybugsAbound

Chief of Wild Bird Operations (CWBO) Wren.

Chief Genetics Officer (CGO) Jenks

Chief Manure Disturbance Monitor (CMDM) Fla_Chick

Special Agent, Chick Inspection Division (SACID) Sewincircle

Chief Poultry Protest Protocol and Secret Experience Officer (CPPPSEO) Patchouli78
(say that one ten times fast and you get a free egg.)

I think Harmony is attempting a counter-intelligence maneuver. If any of us can remember that many pieces of identification, they are certainly spies sent over from some other more orderly forum. One that never has to worry about breaking up cupcake fights and preventing the pouring of maple syrup on new hatched chicks.

Clever, Harmony. I foresee a promotion from this.

Dahianut--you are entitled to one "virtual chick"...that allows you access to all the P&L forum membership benefits. After the expiration of the "virtual chick"--usually after 6 months--you are required to re-up with a real chick. Ninja decoding skills are badly needed--and being a Canadian you will be required to translate Moxon's peculiar idioms into a more understandable form for those of us down under. Of course, Josh, being even more down under, may require a separate translator.

This is a good link : http://www.sheepandgoat.com/articles/deerworm.html

I also had a concern about this with the upcoming move to MI, where the darn deer practically live on the back porch...It is a very serious concern and definitely something to think about when planning pastures for me...
I will be checking drainage, and wait for a year after treating the areas before any goats or sheep take up residence...I intend to completely fence the areas, and include electric wire on the outside to deter the deer from trying to breach it...I may have a few meat goats, but I plan on sheep as well for the wool, as well as some angora goats for the hair...
Since my income will be fixed, I certainly can't afford to lose stock to this...

2 weeks after that i came down with pneumonia sittin in the emergency room and couldn't breath they gave me a breathing treatment and the doctor said well you know this is the first sign your lungs is getting bad.
Point blank he said you need to decide you can quit and live or keep smoking and die well true smoker i was i went out under the street light of the emergency room.
Lit a long one and looked up it was misty rain and said i want to see my son grow up i finished that last one stepped on it and never touched another one.

Hey grownut.

I do believe winter is coming early this year - that's when the northern half of the country gets a little crazy.

I'm coming over here because I love chickens and who wants to hang out with the N.E. folks come winter. lol I did post some photos of my true chicken love, although I don't own any. I've been lurking here for a good long while. So, although I don't own a single chicken and never have, I do love many breeds and read up on chickens all the time. This is all because I have had a country house for twenty years, but do not live here full time. My hope is, if this becomes a full time residence, the first thing we'll do is add some chickens. I am impulsive that way as I once bought a pony that lived on the deck until DH fenced a pasture. I do get it figured out. :)

There are so many wonderful chickens. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, but you folks here are very enticing. I don't understand how you add all these chickens to your collections. My very limited experience with chickens is they only get along when raised together, chicken sex is not a pretty sight and incubating is not as easy as it seems. I'll learn along the way. I'm sure.

And do you have a title for yourself? Chief Chicken Dreamer, perhaps?

Chicken sex makes me glad I'm not a chicken! ROTFLMBO!

I added Chicken Control Officer MaypopLaurel to the list.

Chief Between was already added to the list although I had suggested she might want a more important sounding title, especially since she has a REAL military title. I mean, Dusty became General and all...

Josh - I nearly died laughing over the First Church of the Holy Chickens and the Holy Incubator - you are very creative and you crack me up, mate! The Canadian Spelling Police (my second role) would like to report that it's spelled Holy Grail.

No--he's put out a lot of albums that still sell well--just not for everyone. Rollingstone and MTV both tried to give him awards and he refused. He is a bit tempermental and snarky. A lot of people think he is an American Southerner cause he read a lot of Faulkner in his youth and writes very dark and gothic songs--other people compare him to Tom Waites and Leonard Cohen--Johnny Cash did covers of some of his songs--"The Mercy Seat" is one about a crazed murderer preparing to be electrocuted. Sounds dreadful, but it is actually incredible.

Thank you Catscan, for the alternate spelling of grael. I stand corrected, in part. Although grail is still allowed. At least Monty Python says so.

General Dusty, with all due respect, Ma'am, you are confusing two troop members. The Chicken Control Officer is CCO MaypopLaurel. InnBetween wanted to be Chief Between. Two different troop members, Ma'am. Salute!

Chief Petty Officer Moxon had suggested a more elaborate title for Chief Between, more befitting her status and previous military title of Chief Warrant Officer. She could be Chief Warrant Officer Between. But this has a lack of chicken-ness to it. Of course, so does my title, but it relates to my petty corrections of spellings as the official Chickenhead Spelling Police.

What does a Warrant Officer do? Do they put out warrants for arrests? Perhaps Chief Between should be Chief of Errant Chicken Behaviour or Chief of Preventing Chicken Naughtiness or something.

Moxy over.

Anyway...bugaloos. My husband reminded me that the creators of all those shows I liked back then, were Sid (or Syd) and Marty Croft. Ahhh...good memories.

Off topic, but I spent the morning harvesting more veggies for my chickens (that are not really mine, but I like to pretend they are). I get so excited about seeing them! Forget the kids and even the grand. Gotta have some chicken love.

I'm hoping for an official title to be confirmed (is there an official title "conferer"?), and perhaps some perks for having chicken lust (like a title). Maybe I can shop at the PX (that stands for poultry exchange, yes?) I'm worried about possible age discrimination on this forum. There will be no comment from me regarding retro-media.

Today was a good day. I got a double yolk for brkfst. The second time in two weeks. Who could ask for anything more? BTW, garlic was left out of the food groups. What's with that?

Well if you're into sewing, I'm sure he'd be willing to model tight pants! ROTFL...

His favorite woman is my buff orpington gal. He is very active in his pursuit of her. He is also very attracted to Goldie, and here she is... (I don't have a pic of the buff orpington, but I can take one tomorrow...)

Goldie is an Easter Egger barnyard mix kinda gal. Wrong side of the tracks but a heart of gold.

Ummm. Viz the rankings in this joint...Visualize, if you please, a tight cluster of about 25 frantic chicks. Gen'rul Dusty is tallest. The rest of us are clambering up, down, around, over and under, as we jockey for position. This is a CHICKENy group. We model our ranking system after those we most admire.

Noticing that Kelly in Moxee and Galles and a few others have yet to acquire rankings. I nominate Kelly to be Minister of Chicken Defense (civilian advisor)
LadyBugs and Patchy (ooli-ooli) are also as yet untitled...

Where's the fun in allowing others to be discreet when we're not?!;-)

Did not buy anything! I know I am going to the Doctor on Monday, I promise. I know something has to be despartly wrong for us not to by something. Actually I was going to buy, but someone beat me to him. He was the most beautiful Partridge cochin roo to go with our girls and I walked past twice and then finally decided right as the guy was collecting money from someone else.

I am thoroughly confused about the poultry showing process. See my new thread.

Hello all very tired from fleamarket sold all but 6 Doves the pigeons went fast at $20 pair the folks really liked those and the doves sold well.
It was a very interesting day people telling me their chicken stories and me listening and commenting some.
I didn't get to shop but did sneak over to a man who had chickens and guess what grow he had a leg bar looked just like the picture on hunky roo.
Thats the third one i've seen so they are out there.
My Biggest deal of the day was a man ask me to trade for some of my doves and when i ask what he had it was something i had been wanting Diamond Doves!
He really wanted some of my Ash colored doves and i said i would have to see the Diamonds first and with that he said i will be right back.
He drove to his house 50 miles away and brought back 2 pair of the cutest little blue doves but i didn't let on how excited i was (Can't show excitement during a deal).
He said you give me the 3 Ash and $20 and you can have both pairs...I countered with no i will give you the 3 ash and 2 peach for both pairs...He said no give me 3 ash and 2 peach and $10...I had him and he was thinkin I said no deal I'll take the dark blue pair and you can have the 3 ash and he began to sweat...He said are you sure you don't want both and i said "NA" don't really need the one...he said okay the 3 ash for the dark blue...He removed them and i put them in one of my cages and he said but i like all these doves and thats when i knew i had him good.
So final deal he got 3 ash and 2 peach which i have 0 dollars in cause i hatch them and i got 2 pair of Diamond doves that sell for $35 to $50 a pair.
So do yall think i got a good deal and i will get a pic on here soon as i can.
But i had a good time and made some money for my vaccine and of course a little extra for me and i met alot of people and several have my number wanting chickens, rabbit's, dove's and pigeon's unfortunately i had to tell them it's off season for breeding anything and i would have plenty of all come spring.
So thats my day and it was an adventure as always.

Going to school full time, after not being in school for 16 years with a family and working too...whew, I'm still trying to adjust. I am hoping the cable TV that we get will be able to give us a whole bigger selection of things to watch, cuz there isn't a whole lot on regular TV that is worth its weight in gold. My mom is on hospice care, so watches a lot of TV. Her eyesight isn't good enough to read so we are kinda stuck. I am looking forward to the History Channel and HGTV. If it was just DH and me, we would only have a set for movies on DVD. When the kids were growing up, the set would "break" periodically.

That is too funny Gloria. Perhaps you were floating in those platform shoes? I was a child of the sixties. Very intense times.

I have been reconnoitering the streets of Atlanta today. Apparently chickens are limited to Costco, Whole Foods, Trader Joes and the like. Atlanta chickens don't have interesting names like the ones here, don't lay pretty colored eggs and have no feet at all (let alone ones with feathers). I'm restocking my mess kit and heading back to the woods. Done chicken checkin' here. Time to check out (with permission of course).

We have two known pockets of chicken culture in the midst of the city. They are pop culture town centers. The city has turned a pecked eye to Cabbage Town and another spot (Waterworks), dead center in the city. Waterworks is the "decorator" center of the city and chickens with their handsome roos are running around the parking lots and yards of the designer fabric and custom furniture businesses. Hopefully the valet parking attendants are not driving over too many eggs. I wish I knew what kind of chickens they are. Some are Rhode Island Reds and others are black and slightly barred, but smaller than Barred Rocks. I just don't know much about chickens. I'll take photos next time.

we will send out raging Iowa pigs . . . (to California).

I still remember coming to work at Vandenberg AFB. It was a foggy morning (always is on the California coast) and a group of airmen were gathered for revile standing at attention for roll call.

At that time they were charged by an Arkansas razorback - pigs imported to kill the rattlesnakes at Vandenberg.

They barely got permission to fall out in time to save themselves from the charging pig.

Im sure Iowa pigs would be very effective, CMoxon!

Interesting, now Harmony hears chocolate bars - she said the Snickers are behind her in the hospital. What are they saying? "Get me outta this vending machine!"?

Last time I went for a surgical procedure of sorts (well, okay, among friends, it was a colonoscopy) I had to wear those delightful fabric gowns. They gave me one to put on frontwards and the other to put on backwards, which was very generous of them. Anyway, I am extremely resistant to the woozy meds (versed), so they had to give me the dose of a 400 lb male. I am 5'10" and a size 12 or 14, so nowhere near a 400 lb male. Even that didn't work entirely because I was coming around part way through so they had to re-dose me. Anyway, the point of all this is that afterwards they sent me to get dressed and sent Kelly to help me because by then I was a little woozy. Kelly said (and I do not remember this because I was woozy) that I refused to take the gowns off and was putting on my bra over the top of both gowns and when he tried to help I became belligerent and told him in no uncertain terms that I was not taking the gowns off and that I would put my clothes on over the top of them. I had a little lie-down then and we left later, with my clothes on and no gowns. Sigh...this gets repeated at family gatherings and such now, so it's no secret.

You're right Catscan, the world is a wicked place.

But sometimes it's delightful. Like this morning, I received 15 welsummer eggs and 15 cuckoo maran eggs and every one of them intact and beautiful. Wheeeeeee!!!

Harmony - generally they don't listen. My dentist knows now that it takes 4 shots in my mouth for any filling work to be done, but only because he's done it over and over again until he figured it out. The same people who did the colonoscopy did an upper GI tract about 2 weeks before that, so they already knew, but the first time they wouldn't listen and kept saying "are you sleepy yet" and I would say "no, but my arm is really burning" and they would say "well, you should be asleep by now and then you wouldn't feel your arm burning" and I'm saying "Yeah, well then MAKE ME FALL ASLEEP darn it because my arm really hurts! and they would scramble around and dose me up some more. The IV drip into the arm really burns if you don't fall asleep fast enough.

And no, I haven't seen the secret CF pics!

Hi I am wren and I wish to be a honorary chicken head. Any suggestions on a title for me? I am a slave to the wild birds around here, special my guard wrens who tell me when they need food, and use me as a tree.. I am also a epiphyllum nut. Love all the chickens y'all have but the city will not allow any chickens. darn darn darn.

wren107 you need to get a chick-a-poo. That's what I'm gonna do. Calgary doesn't allow chickens either. If you get a dog licence and register it as a chick-a-poo how can they 'cluck' about it?

He has caught 3 so far. He also only goes after the bad birds. Crows, city pigeons and black birds. His favorite pastime besides eating and getting into mischief is to chase the "squills" up the tree and out of the feeders. I think he would like to take care on the chick-a-poos he is a herding dog.

My male robins take care of the magpies and crows in the summer but a good herding dog is needed for the time of the cold and the dark. I think a good herding dog is also needed for my chick-a-poo to ensure the rototilling is evenly distributed. What do people use for chicken-herding or do they just free-range at will rototilling willynilly???

Mine are willy nilly rototillers. They particularly enjoy rototilling in the goat pen.

Wren, I hereby title you as Chief of Wild Bird Operations. Please do see to it that you instruct all chicken-heads who forget that wild birds also need feeding. And also please be on hand for chicken hatching missions to provide moral support to those hatching. We do chicken hatching dances with pom poms.

If you misbehave, the punishment is usually in the form of coffee-ups. This is where you have to lift a coffee mug to your mouth repeatedly. Tea-ups are also available if you have an aversion to coffee.

Since you haven't got any eggs to share, feel free to share baked goods and consult with Kitchen Protocol Officer Jan on any rules regarding baked goods. We have had cupcake slinging incidents in the past. Tsk tsk.

Catscan usually starts them.

Welcome CWBO Wren. Concerning rules regarding baked goods.
1. You must ALWAYS be on the look-out for lurking cupcakes. I understand in the past that there has been a problem. However, since getting my title ,I must say they have been behaving. LKOFC
2. If there are any fresh baked goods you must ALWAYS share with the rest of the flock.
3. I almost forgot. You must NEVER say the word pecan out loud. It makes someone very agitated. lol

That is a Plott Hound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plott_Hound. She is only four years old. The breed was just admitted into the AKC (why, I don't know). The AKC allows show Plotts to be branded (cold branded) because they are used for hunting in packs. Ours is not. They must be brindle and often have gray or white muzzles (makes them look old). Her name is Pepper because she has a classic peppered black spots on white chest as well as feet. She really does look like a dog put together by a committee. She is well bred with a white tip on her tail so she can be ID in the brush. They were bred from German blood hounds (by the Plott family) and N. Carolina mountain dogs a few hundred years ago. They are the state dog of N.C., though no one has ever heard of them. They are pack hunters, climb trees to pull down game and will hunt and kill wild boar.

Okay, I have rambled. You can see the love... but she is such a pain!

I've seen one or two breeders your way Catscan. They were stolen for breeding and never seen outside the Appalachians until a few years ago. You could not get a breeder to sell you a dog unless you could prove a pack hunting lineage. It's like the Hemingway cats that people kidnapped to breed from Key West. She is the bantam of canines. Not so large, but can be very aggressive. Here she is in a tree (after a possum). Not so mellow.

I would be most happy to "Borrrow" if those of you ranking will share photos for my elucidation and enlightenment. So, If it's okay, and with your permission, may I move up from recruit to CBO?

BTW, I do have a previous relationship with Jan, and am willing to assist with KP (I'm a caterer). If I can help General (?) Dusty, I am also a critical care R.N.. Don't know if that helps with pipping.

CBO (Chief Borrowing Officer) MaypopLaurel reporting. So sorry, sirs/mames. I have been reconnoitering like crazy all over GA. I deployed eighty five miles northward today to get a lay of the land. Way more chickens, but they have names like "F287"s and they go for truck rides every six weeks. The life of a chicken is not all cluck and scratch here. There are those out there who are oppressed!. I'll report when I learn more. Request permission to go covert op for a few days.

And for the US folks, Smarties in Canada are like M&Ms but slightly flatter and better tasting. For which see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties_(Nestlé)

Indeed, it is the sad truth, Dahlianut. My mother sends me Smarties on a regular basis. She also sends me Wunderbar and Aero and Coffee Crisp bars. :-) Oh, and hickory sticks. I just LOVE hickory sticks, and they are not here.

Plus, the kit kat is made with a different chocolate. It is startlingly different if you taste them side-by-side. Then I found an article that explained about it and how the Canadian chocolate palate prefers a darker and slightly more brittle chocolate, while the American palate prefers a milder and more waxy consistency. Go figure.

Oh, and Kraft Dinner isn't Kraft Dinner here. It's Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. If you say you ate KD for lunch, nobody knows what you mean. AND, the cheese mix is different. It is WAY milder here.

Friends and family send me KD from time to time too. Old habits die hard.

'I think the 'medium' or standard size egg was 2 ounces here, over that is large and under is small. There are machines for weighing too!

[HYPERLINK@www.solwayfeeders.com]

The Dept. of Food and Fisheries as I think it's called here has always had strict regulations in place for as long as I know, and the European Union has taken control of many of those Standards so some things have had to change such as weights to Kilos instead of Pounds, even the long green cucumbers had to be straight! She is indeed. She is my animal rescue league hen. She was picked up downtown wandering about and was taken to city animal control. Then she went to the rescue league. I adopted her from there. She was horribly skinny and missing feathers. She started out on daily cottage cheese, oatmeal, and chopped grapes and tomatoes. She was tremendously coddled and cuddled! Then, about 3 weeks after I got her, she laid her first egg, and I nearly squealed when I saw it. I never even expected her to lay after all she'd been through (including having been debeaked on both top and bottom right back to the nostrils) but she is my best and most consistent layer, and also follows me around like a puppy. Just love her!

And this just in from France:

"Because the British are weird?
Because their chickens are huge?
Because eggs are one thing that hasn't been "Big-Gulped"? (Although, since the standard American breakfast consists of eggs with trimmings and the standard European breakfast rarely gas an egg, that would be odd!)
Because the British take every chance they can get to fly in the face of EU standards?
Because NA chicken factories crowd the birds so closely that they can't produce normal-sized eggs?

I've no idea!
I have noticed that I usually have to buy "Large" eggs in the States to equate to what I know as "Moyen" (i.e. literally "medium", nut maybe that is UK "standard").
Here you can see a comparison:

European Sizes US Sizes

"Petit/Small" is 71 g

Why is a British/Canadian gallon bigger than a US gallon?
Why do so many small men wear big mustaches?

Go figure!"

Ain't he a hoot? :-) Note ma francais ami is originally from Spokane WA so is an American in disguise. Too funny.

Well, I'm still reconnoitering while you guys are goofing off philosophizing, eating chocolates and trying to figure out how to stuff your big, fat eggs into a small box. Come on troops, I gave you the heads up on the chicken trucks! And speaking of "comb overs", check out the Travel Channel. Andrew Zimmer was noshing cocks combs this very a.m.. It's all in the sauce. Now I'm dreaming of a dim sum with cock's combs and chicken feet. I have not had feet in five years. Why can't we engineer chickens that lay feet and combs along with eggs? That's the real question. Those of us who exist as part of the poultry underground can't depend on normative fare.

Hi, Harmony, I'm freezing my feathers off in Atlanta. Will be back in Cleveland this weekend. This is just not normal...twenties nights on and off for weeks with forties days. Ice pellets on the decks after four days of gloom and rain. If I had chickens in the midwest, we'd be talking frozen, starved poultry. I ask DH, "Is it Spring yet?" multiple times a day (and night). lol

Combs are awesome and less work than feet. I think the only edible part I've not had is testicles. Since I'm underground, if anyone has access to product or recipes, I'm "game" for the cause.

Apparently the British have recently changed their egg size designations so that they are more similar in name to the US. But not the sizes. The weights are in grams. Voila:

British Small is 53g and under/US Small is 42.5g (The US gives the weight in ounces by the dozen, so I converted)

British Medium is 53-63g/US Medium is 49.6g.

British Large is 63-73g/US Large is 56.7g.

British Very Large is 73g and up/US Extra Large is 63.8g.

The US also has two additional sizes: Jumbo--70.9g and Peewee--35.4g.

So a British Medium egg may be nearly as large as a US Extra Large. Shocking!

Edited to add EU regulations--same as Brits: http://www.foodlaw.rdg.ac.uk/news/eu-96-6.htm

ROTFL Dahlianut. Good one!

I may need the hatching crew in upcoming weeks. Due to the many losses here, I have taken a ridiculous risk and bought some eggs from eggbid. If they don't all freeze, I might have some hatches. We shall see...

Commander Moxon is meditating while awaiting egg arrival.

I won the following from eggbid:
12 white and buff silkie eggs
12 Rhode Island red eggs
12 Delaware eggs

I also bid on 18 mixed breed and 18 buff orpingtons.

If any of them make it here without freezing, I will be amazed, but I have to give it my best shot. Also, a friend at work who has chickens is going to bring me a dozen mixed breed eggs next week from her farm. They will be barred rock crosses.

That is great Claire! Congrats! It is indeed eggciting.
I ordered 6 showgirls. They did not come. They are sending out another batch.
I think they will be just fine. I can not imagine having all those eggs in the bator at once! hehehe.
I panic with 8!

Claire remember you Must Thoroughly Clean and disinfect your whole surroundings and equipment. I most certainly would not recommend bringing in any eggs to hatch or chickens.

I was going to say concernig your outbreak in some cases of an outbreak the adult chickens that don't get sick can be the carriers of the disease. Loseing that many chickens is a warning that your enviroment is contaminated and that it was brought in from somewhere. It's usually the last chickens that is brought on your property that spread the virus.
If i had this happen in my flock and it was as severe as yours i personally would depopulate all adults as suspious carriers. I might even consider putting down the chicks if i thought they could be carriers when well.
I would clean an disinfect all waters, feeders, remove all bedding and burn it as well as remove all nest boxs and either disinfect or get new ones.

I'm not trying to be harsh just giveing the facts if you bring in more and expose them to this you could well be dealing with more sickness and death.

Harmony - good points. None of my indoor chicks are sick now. I think my indoor setting is fine. I am very conscious of washing my hands when I come in, and getting changed too. I will hatch indoors and they won't be going outside until much later (likely March or April) so by then, we will have decontaminated everything. We bought Nolvasan disinfectant which is also a virucide. You have to wear protective gloves and mask to use it, but we don't want to use it until we have a day above freezing, because it is dangerous until it evaporates dry. That won't happen when it's this cold, so we need to wait. Since all my outdoor birds are already exposed, I can't worry about them now. I will have to worry about the introduction phase. What I think I will do is introduce any new chicks in small numbers. For example, if I had 10 chicks, I might put out 2 and see how they do - kind of like what you did with the birds you put with the Spanish. I thought that was a really good idea.

Sounds good Claire but IMHO i wouldn't hatch or bring in anything until i was sure it was gone.
I just couldn't risk it as it has been such a short time since all this has occurred.

I would also be suspious of the ones that didn't come down with it at all as being carriers of it.
Most chickens will at least show a minimal reaction runny eye or a little droopy. But a carrier will be well and appear healthy because it has already had it and is simply spreading it.
I would IMHO still depopulate because if there is a carrier in will only recontaiminate the coop and grounds after you disinfect.
If you don't want to depopulate i would sudjest purchaseing some culls chickens you know are healthy but are willing to sacrifice. This will show you if you do have carriers or not before you introduce your chicks.

Well, I did some research on it, since I would prefer not to kill the rest of my flock, all of whom have been exposed. There is no information I can find on chickens being carriers of the infectious bronchitis virus. As a rule, viruses run their course and are finished. I mean this from the microbiological standpoint. Vaccinations are available for IB, so I am going to order some. I can vaccinate new birds, but the virus does not last for a long time outside of the bird, so the 3 months should be more than enough that the virus shouldn't be present any more. This is different from Infectious coryza, for instance, which does result in carrier birds. IB doesn't result in carriers.

I don't believe it to be coryza because there is no smell to the nasal discharge, which seems to be a key symptom in identifying coryza.

I don't know what else it could be. They have:
- no facial swelling
- no bad odors
- no poop problems
- gummed shut eyes (frequent)
- wheezing/rattling breathing
- sneezing (occasional)
- nasal discharge (some)
- sometimes bubbles in the eyes or eyes watery
- good appetite and good water drinking
- not lethargic or droopy most of the time

Any other thoughts on what it could be are welcomed!

Not right now. At the moment I am putting erythromycin in the water to prevent secondary bacterial infections. I don't know what effect the vinegar would have with the antibiotic since it might change its effectiveness given the unusual pH level of the water with vinegar in it. Since I am not sure about that, I elected not to combine them. I will use the antibiotic for a week and then switch to ACV.

Claire sounds very hopeful with the vaccine and disinfecting i researched as well and found different opinions on it causeing carriers.
Damerow said the survivors become carriers but a link said it produced carriers for up to 4 weeks and still another said a year.

I brought up a link that explains things for others here http://www.shagbarkbantams.com/ib.htm

Claire i'm still suprised that after all that went on in your flock you have eggs comeing...

thanks for those other opinions Harmony - I am nervous about the one that said a year. What a huge difference of opinion between 4 weeks and a year! Shows you how you can't believe everything you read because they can't all be right!

My first instinct, after all that happened, was to say "I have to rebuild my flock" and that is why I impulsively went and ordered eggs. I felt like it was the thing I had to do. Maybe it was wrong. I guess I will find out. I just know that if I sit around being sad and grumpy about it, I will feel worse, so I try to find the solution to get me back on my feet.

I suppose I will be a test case and we will see what happens and everyone can learn from whatever happens. Now that the eggs are coming, I'm not going to just throw them out, so I will incubate and hope for the best. I just can't face killing the rest of my birds now, not when I have just dealt with all these deaths.

I like your idea of using some cull birds - ones that I am willing to sacrifice - and see what happens when they are introduced. I think that is what I will try, around the end of April, when things are warming up a bit more. By then it will be four months from the disease time, and better temperatures, and some of the babies from the basement (if any hatch) should be ready to go out. I don't want to get cull birds from an unknown source because then how would I know if they aren't bringing something in. That makes me nervous too.

Not trying to be a know it all here and i hope you know that :-)

I just didn't want a repeat of what has already went on and you suffering further heartache.
I know all to well how these chickens pull at our heart strings. I guess i was the test case with the pox and yes those links on pox were different about carriers too.
I hope all goes well and if you need advice or help or just want to vent my heart is always open♥

Of course I know you are not being a know-it-all - no worries, it didn't come across that way to me. You are just trying to spare me from having to go through what you went through, and you know that I appreciate that very much. I was nervous every day to check and see how your birds were doing and hoping it was getting better but sometimes it was just getting worse. I hope it isn't like that with mine but who knows what will happen.

I am pleased to say that it has now been 5 days with no deaths, and that's pretty good considering where we started. I'm glad to have the ducklings too, they make me laugh.

I've haven't been up to being on much with this infection But i love the ducks maybe one day i can get me some.
5 Days and no deaths you may be at the end of the outbreak i got my fingers crossed.

Well i'm fixin to set my incubater been collecting eggs and wrapping them in plastic wrap. I have 36 and will collect this week then set them it's time for me to get my flock back to produceing.
All mine are happy and singing away and i have 9 hens laying but as always with bantams it's every other day.
Thats why i'm doing the plastic wrap to extend my egg gathering time so they don't evaporate and become unhatchable.
