Marna, you missed the best pie apple altogether! lol, my grandmother couldn't make a pie without Northern Spies! They, like Macoun, are an October apple with a firm texture and spicy flavor. I'm going this afternoon to pick some up, some for pie now and some to freeze for later.

ACK! I skimmed right over that! that will teach me to read articles before my morning tea!

mea culpa!

Odd, they should grow there - same zone after all. They do take a long time to bear fruit, but believe me, it is worth the wait.

haha. SKIMMING my articles eh? I was searching for some local orchards that carried these and did not find any. I did see some in the region, but just not local. I WILL get some eventually. Just goes back to the whole regional thing.l Some are just favorites in different areas!

Oh sob how I miss northern spies. My mom used to buy them by the bushels from Waldale Orchards for pies and apple sauce. They grow them in BC but our stores don't seem to carry them.
