Darius: Thank you for this informative article. I, too, love leeks and am trying to grow more of my own veggies, but in a suburban yard, which DH thinks should be green lawn, it's difficult to have other than tomatoes, lettuce, and a few things for just a salad garden. Just bought some leeks yesterday at Wally World to make some leek soup. Yum!

Thanks again for a great article. I just used a bunch when canning up salsa for the winter with most of the final tomatoes, bell peppers, and hot peppers from the garden. I used all the green that I could from it. I also used regular yellow onions. I had to buy the garlic and fresh cilantro as mine is gone. I have planted more garlic for next year. I have frozen a lot of cilantro, but wanted fresh in the salsa. I still have more leeks in the bed and now I know what to do with them. Patti

Thanks. Patti, you should be able to leave leeks in the ground over winter in zone 7a. Yesterday I noticed mine in the root cellar are still growing (I read that they would) but how much was a surprise... probably as much as 6 inches taller on some of them.

Excellent work on this under-loved and under-appreciated vegetable! Folks really need to try some of the less popular veggie's like leeks, kholrabi, Brussel sprouts, etc. They really don't know what they are missing! And growing them is easy and fun.

FYI: I just made a big pot of leek and potato soup today and was it ever good! The leeks have such a gentle flavor, not overwhelming like onions. Mmmm-mmm!
