    Oh, I bet they didn't even back then.
    I saw a recent show on TV that said humans are always ready to pick out faces, eyes, nose and mouth out of anything.

    Hmmm - that is why the wood pattern in the door to my childhood bedroom had a face in it.

    That is why we like carving faces in round things like turnips and pumpkins.

    But then we sort of feel silly doing it -- so nothing like a great story to go along with it, for little kids.

    I enjoyed this story four years ago and still like it.
    This year I have a lot of big - sweet turnips - but they are not getting eat. I think I will make some little latterns out of a few of them for Halloween -- always nice to have festive light when the days grow short and the dark comes so early.
