I'm probably going to purchase a new refrigerator in the next few months. I have narrowed down the choice to one of two brands and the brand isn't really my concern. I'd like to go for the counter depth french door/bottom freezer, but I'm slightly worried about the loss of space with the counter depth vs regular. Looking at them empty it doesn't look like a great loss. There are only 2 of us, so it's not like we have a fridge full of stuff most of the time anyway. Plus I have an extra small refrigerator I use for drinks, the Thanksgiving overflow, etc. We currently have a 22 cu ft side-by-side. Things do tend to get shoved to the back and forgotten a lot.

Do any of you have the counter-depth models? If so, what do you think?

Thanks in advance for your input!!

I've had a counter depth fridge & freezer for about 2 years now, and i really haven't noticed the lack of depth. What I do like is that I can see & reach things that are at the back of the fridge.

We are also in the market for a new frig. I definitely want a counter depth but was also concerned with the loss of cubic feet. Have you found a french door, bottom freezer with ice and water dispenser in the door? How about a water/ice dispenser that is tall enought to accomodate a water pitcher? I'm pretty sure it was LG that had it. Was wondering which other ones are out there.

Most manufacturer's are putting out models with ice & water dispensers in the door. It was a 'must have' for me as I've always got a big glass of water.

Celia, I am looking at the Jenn-Air and the Kitchen-Aid models as front-runners right now. Mostly because of their track record. I believe LG also has a model with the ice/water dispenser, but I can't recall if they offer a counter-depth model with that feature. I don't know if the dispenser will accommodate a pitcher. My current side-by-side Kitchen-Aid handles it ok, but you have to tilt it inward to fill.

Thanks to both of you for your input. Jo-Ann, I'm happy to hear you haven't missed the depth. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear from experience.

Just a quick follow-up...I had a new Jenn-Air delivered yesterday!! It was a matter of 'having to' now as mine died over the weekend. They had the Jenn-Air in stock, which was my front-runner anyway, and the Kitchen-aid would have to be ordered. It does seem a little smaller in volume than my old side-by-side, but then again, I probably have too much stuff in there. Plus the ice-maker/water dispenser takes up a good chunk of space.

This is the Kenmore we are getting; the finish is like a mirror, called Black Pearl. I like that the water dispenser is more streamlined looking than most.

Ya oughta see it in person . . . even better than the picture. I would imagine it will finger print but so does stainless. A little stainless accent is nice but I didn't want a hunkin' big refrig in all stainless for our purposes. The cabinets next to it are called "Steel Gloss" and that would make entirely too much grey for my DH's taste.
