We have twice visited Thailand and going again in January 2009. On our first trip we received a pleasant surprise when we discovered that our visit coincided with the Royal Flora Expo 2006 near Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. It was held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the crowning of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Association of International Horticultural Producers (AIPH) gave the expo A1 status, its highest honor. It was amazing and attracted 3,781,624 visitors over 3 months. The orchid display was out of this world and the bonsai just unbelievable. There are a number of websites with info about it.
Different countries from around the world participated by having individual pavilions showcasing their plants. The Netherlands pavilion featuring tulips and daffodils was a big hit with the local Thai people but of little interest to us as we can grow those plants in our own garden here in Australia.
Thank you for sharing your experiences at Nong Nooch Gardens, we will be sure to visit them on one of our future trips to Thailand. It is a wonderful country and the people so polite and gentle. And of course, the shopping is fantastic.
