I always enjoy viewing all the art that is shared here, so thought I would show one of mine. Just a beginner, but having lots of fun, this is an acrylic portrait of my sister, from a photo I took of her in a coffee shop. Its her birthday today and this is my gift to her, hope she likes it!

That made a unique portrait. I really like it. I am sure that your sister will be delighted with it. It doesn't look like a beginners work to me!

Thanks Zany! I appreciated your feedback. My sister loved it - or maybe she was just being nice, but now she is stuck with it..tee hee. Started to dabble in the acrylics about a year ago and took some art lessons from a gallery around the corner from where I am staying in Canada.
Anna our teacher is fantastic and a wonderful artist! http://www.ruberto-ostberg.com

Here is one of my lastest class projects, not finished yet - I never know when to stop painting leaves...and I am looking forward to learning how to paint the grass on my next class.

Gardener, your chicken and your tree/leaves (acasia?) are wonderful!! How did you manage to put the upper dark background after you painted the chicken? I would have thought you'd do the background first. Amazing! The detail for the leaves and trunks are wonderful! Keep up the great work :D

Sis_E~thanks for your feedback! I think the tree's are a type of aspen poplar, don't know for sure, pretty common in Alberta. My art tech is a birch tree guru, so that's why I tried painting one while in Canada. Frankly the leaves are driving me nuts!

With my chicken, I decided not to do the background from the photo, so just smudged away and got lucky that it looked not to bad. I thought the dark background really made him pop! It really was not that hard. He was my first project from my very first art class back home in the US in April. I was pretty happy with him, so glad you liked him too.

I am starting a large canvas with a dark background and my art teach told me to dark gesso the canvas first, which I thought was a great idea - saves on the paint!! I will try and attach a picture of the photo - actually another DG photographer took the picture and gave me permission to paint it.

I am on a steep learning curve, but having so much fun and really enjoying sharing my adventure with the fellow artist on DG!

Just thought so when you mentioned black gesso. Acrylics are what most painters start out with. They are so easy to work with, great colors. Many professional painters use acrylic paint. Black gesso is quite nice. You tend to have lovely dark backgrounds and shadows in your photographs, too.

Garden, I too use acrylics. Black gesso is a great idea. I assume you can black gesso a canvas that already has 3 layers of white gesso on it? Those are the canvases I buy. Already primed with 3 layers of white gesso.

You know, Aspen is what I was thinking of not Acasia! LOL.

I love that last painting, too!. The water refleftion effect is fantastic! I bet that took a long time to do! :)

Not a bad idea. I seem to have trouble painting from photographs. I like painting outdoors best. I have always admired your still life with tulips since I first saw it on the photo thread. It really stuck in my mind. Painting?

Thanks again Royb, sometimes the light is just so right for those type of photo's. As for painting it, I think is a bit out of my league (right now anyways) maybe you should take a crack at it! I was thinking of a portion of it though, as a possibility.
I have never tried painting from real life, always from photo's.
What new pieces have you been working on?

The light on those is so beautiful. I think you could paint it. I'm not painting well lately. I decided to do some printing, (I used to do block prints and make stamps), on some t-shirts just to play and loosen up. I bought 8 pretty good white t-shirts at a thrift store with no holes or stains for 25 cents each! So I can get pretty crazy and not feel that I've ruined anything. I listen to Afro-Cuban music and just have fun! I have also been doing some acrylic painting to continue an old mural type thing on my kitchen wall. That is a very slow project.
