As you identified, the Andes were the place the Spanish first found potatoes, took them back to Europe, then introduced them worldwide. I have fun at the Pinebrook Children's Garden in the Pennsylvania Poconos where we have a Bolivian section. We grow Peruvian Purple Potatoes there that sprout in the spring even if left in the ground. We also enjoy the potatoes left after the ornamental sweet potato vines freeze ... many varieties. (We do not use sprays on these plants.) Our dinner guests actually prefer baked sweets (ornamentals included) to baked white potatoes.
