I grew Tree Dahlia this year from a tuber I got by mail order. It was a very impressive plant but unfortunately got hit by early frost just prior to blooming which blackened all the foliage. I have cut it back but need to know, will it survive in zone 7B if I mulch it heavily? If I dig it up do I cut the stubs of stalks still remaining down to the tuber, or let them drop off naturally, or what? I have looked at websites regarding overwintering but I still have stalks above ground that are about the size of bamboo and I don't see anything mentioned about what to do with that.
