I live on the coast of Maine, and have a couple small Japanese Maples that I used in containers this past summer. They are about 18", and 28" or so high. I have buried them in their pots next to the foundation on the north side of the house but I'm reading conflicting things about what to do as far as mulch. Should I just mulch the ground and pots, or should I completely cover the entire trees including branches with oak leaves, as I do with my hydrangea? Would that be bad for the trees when the leaves become wet and heavy with snow? I want to give them the best chance of making it. Help!
