I am creating some new categories in the Marketplace to help folks find products easier.

There is a new Tropical Plants category right now, and those vendors who have tropicals can start moving them over.

There will be a few more additions today and I will update you as it happens. The inventory has grown to the point that we need to divide it up a bit.

I am open for suggestions.

I've added Annual Plants and Perennial Plants

I'm waffling a bit on the seeds though. I think Perennial Seeds has plenty of products to move over, but am wondering if Tropical Seeds might be a better choice if we were to choose just one. There will always be a 'seeds' category, and I really see more tropicals than annuals at the moment.

What are your opinions?

The time of year might change the ammounts and kinds of seeds being offered.

For now, Tropical seeds sounds like a good idea to me.

(Edited to add: I wonder if the seeds would do good like this:

Vegetables and herb seeds

Tropical seeds

Flowers and ornamental plant seeds

I`m only brainstorming so write in if you think of something too.

I have added Perennial Seeds and Tropical Seeds to the categories. Please spread the word so we can get these areas active.

I'm holding off on any more categories for now to see if these help us manage the traffic any better. I'll to monitor these categories and will add new ones as I see the need. There will be more coming, but let's play with these awhile.

Some of the categories were just getting just getting too full for everyone to have their products showcased. I'm hoping that this will help get some of those monster ones pared down to where everyone gets a fair shake.

We'd like to get things in place and organized over the winter so that when the bulk of folks start thinking about buying and selling this spring, we'll have a better vehicle for both sides.

I would love to see a division in the Arts and Crafts for "supplies". As an example - I have a couple of hundred vintage knitting and crocheting books that I know someone who was looking for patterns would love to have that I could list and find new homes for. In addition, I find wonderful craft supplies at local tag sales that will really just hit the landfill if I they don't find a new home. I'd love to list them for sale but the Arts and Crafts division seems to be just already made crafts. I would bet that other DGers have left over art and craft supplies that they would love to sell and lots of DGers who want to make things and would love a bargain. What do you think?

Thanks for adding categories -- that'll make Marketplace much easier to navigate!

Although I sympathize with not wanting too many categories, most of the seed catalogs I get have separate categories for different types of things, so I like gardener's suggestion of separating veggie/herb seeds from flowering/ornamental seeds, breaking the latter down into annuals and perennials.

I think tender perennials/tropicals/houseplantsshould be their own category also... I know there are some tender perennials many people grow as annuals, so there may be some overlap, but I think that's OK (I'll just look both places if I want to find a listing for something like Torenia).

I do want to see a separate listing for non-tropical perennial seeds, since I grow a lot of (hardy) perennials from seed.

This may sound really dumb, but I'm not sure where to put tsome things like Nandina and Tree Ivy - since these are evergreen plants - would they be under Perennials or just Live plants??

To me it's not evergreen-ness or not that determines whether it goes in perennials (there are evergreen perennials as well as herbaceous ones). I'd look more at whether it is woody or not--Nandina for sure is a woody shrub so I would not put it in the perennials. Tree ivy I'm not familiar with but if it's more of a vine or a shrub then I wouldn't put it in perennials either.

All you have to do is scroll down a tiny bit farther down the page and you can see all the categories. And there are only one or two categories that aren't plant/garden supply related so I don't understand why it's a big issue? Also if you look in the navigation box that shows up on the left or right side of your screen, I think the categories there are listed in the order in which they were created and it seems closer to what you were hoping for with the plant material categories at the top. Once there get to be a lot more categories then it might be nice to let people choose what order they want to see things but for now it doesn't seem that hard to locate a category that you're interested in.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion on how things could "work better". Just because the information is accessible by taking a few extra steps, doesn't mean that is what would "work better" for someone else. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I for one, don't see why plants, cuttings, seeds - in other words "plant material" - couldn't be lumped together, then crafts, books, etc. This is something for Dave and other Admin personnel to consider next time they are considering making a change.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I think the setup is great, for being in existence for less than a year! I'm just saying (for my own selfish convenience), that groupings (live plant material - one group, books/pots/etc - second group) would be nice.

That way, when I search the Marketplace for say - African Violet - I could choose from a group, instead of having to choose each individual category. THEN choose the individual category from that group if I wanted . . . does that make sense to anyone except me?

What I am really, really, really looking forward to in the future, though . . . is more specific searches . . . When I do the above mentioned search, other plants NOT an African Violet appear in the search. Oh, I know it's because there is the words "african" or "violet" in the title or description . . . but it can be . . . oh, like I said - looking forward to a change in that in the future.

I think Dave may have all sorts of new and improved search features in the works... Sometimes you can narrow down searches (not sure how the Marketplace search works presently) by putting "African violet" in quotation marks... that will make it search for the phrase rather than for one word or the other.

I am just bascially saying give them a chance to get things up and going. And it is a thing that you can't please everybody and it takes awhile to get it the way it should be. Just be pleased that they are at least trying to do what everybody wants and when you have a couple dozen people ask for it to be their way doesn't make it right. I am a believer in give credit for trying anyway.

I think having really good search capabilities will be better in the end than trying to organize everything into just the right categories to please everybody, especially since everybody (buyers and sellers) will have different ideas about what to put where if categories get too numerous.

If we can type "African violets" into the search engine and have it pull up every entry with that tag/keyword, that will be like having an African violet category, only better, because that same entry (say, a pair of AV leaves) could also be tagged as "houseplants" and "unrooted cuttings" to come up on those categorical searches.

A better Marketplace is on the To Do list for the new year. We're just trying to get through the next couple of weeks without getting overwhelmed with a multitude of projects open and hanging loose.

The problem with the search button is that you are limited to how the seller has entered the information. Many buyers were simply scrolling through the multitude of listings...and with live plants, that got to be an daunting task.

Hopefully, we'll get things running smoother shortly.
