I grew up on cushaws in the South -- served in a casserole kind of like sweet potatoes. I haven't grown them, but I have seen them at the Farmers' Market, here, though. The local Native Americans grow them.
I may have to try growing them. I have become very fond of winter squash -- especially home grown.

You'd like growing them then... one of the easier winter squash IMO.
