Can anyone identify this plant? The people who had it tried to tell me what it was but my Portuguese was rudimentary at best (nada) and theri English did not have the words.
It is an Angel's something. The flower is extremely fragrant and fleshy, smelling a bit like a gardenia. It evidently grows from a bulb, but one that you get in the spring (April) to plant for fall (Oct) bloom.
Any ideas?
I would like to perhaps find one here in the states.
Thank you!

The double-flowered cultivars of Tuberose, Polyanthes tuberosa, originated in Holland. The above cultivar may be 'The Pearl' or 'Excelsior'.
The Mexican plant is single flowered and produces fruit; double flowered cultivars do not produce fruit.
In the perfume industry, the "Single Mexican" is the flower of choice, grown for fragrance extraction.
The Aztec called it "omixochitl", and used the flowers to flavor chocolate!
It was definitely the double flowered on. I looked at Pearl and it looked like it, I will see if I can find an image of Excelsior.
A search through the PlantFiles vendors showed bulbs from $2.50 - $6 each, so they are not very very expensive. I will get one and try it in a pot the way that Mrs. Lima had it.
Her pot was a clay one that was low, like an azalea pot.
