Jill, Thank you for your creative writing talent. I always enjoy your articles. With this particular one, you've put into words what everyone here feels about Dave's Garden:

"WE ARE FAMILY"

p.s. That hand painted coffee mug is just wonderful! If you ever get the urge to sell them on the Marketplace I'll be your first customer! Love it!

Well said!!!
I didn't know about the "coffee-clutch" bad side.
It's good to be aware of that, I reckon, in case we visit overseas.

Ditto everyone else on your article, Jill. Makes me forgive myself for all the hours I spend alone at my laptop accessing DG. I'm not alone, I'm hanging out with good pals!

"I'm not alone, I'm hanging out with good pals! "

Right! :-)

Thanks for all the kind words about the article... our community here means a lot to me, and I'm glad I was able to put some of it into words.

Fitzy, my mom said she's always used "clutch" rather than "klatch" also... she says her term is probably of low-german origin, and she likes it, so she's going to ignore the negative connotation! :-)

Oh, and Lin... Dave once gave me permission to do a couple mugs for personal use and as gifts... One has been among the door prizes at the last couple of swaps I've hosted... you'll just have to come up for the next one! :-)

I am interested in see what the mugs look like too. First I have heard of them.

Wonderful, wonderful article Jill. You are a very talented writer and the topic is quite appropriate. Keep 'em comin' girl.

Thanks, Ruby.

The mugs were a desperation ploy on my part... early members have "official" mugs that Dave offered for sale at one time, but after the shipping headaches he said, "never again!" So I had to improvise. I love "Porcelaine" paints -- fire them in the oven, and they're dishwasher safe etc. :-)

Hmm, maybe I need a followup article... how to paint your own DG mug... LOL

Jill: Do you mean swaps up there in Maryland? What a great door prize! hmm ... when does the weather warm up in Maryland? Keep me posted on the next swap! LOL.

Oh, that would be a great article to do on how to paint your own DG mug! Only thing is, I can't even draw a straight line, much less try to paint a pretty flower on a mug! I am not very creative or talented ... can kinda, sorta paint using stencils but have even messed those up before! hmm ... I printed out some DG business cards awhile back, guess I could always print out another one and glue or tape it to a mug each time I drink a cup of coffee, or with me it would more than likely be a cup of tea. :-)

LOL @ the business card idea. Porcelaine does make paint "pens" that are very helpful for outlines.

Yes, swaps up here in Maryland... I've hosted a couple of fall plant swaps and midwinter events... next one will probably be a midwinter seed swap in Feb. :-)

oooh ... too cold in February for me to make a trip that far north, LOL! I've been hibernating the past two days. We've been having unusually cooler weather ... twenty degrees below normal temp's for us. Usually this time of year we are mid to upper 70's during the day and mid to upper 50's at night. Last night it got down to 38 here and there was frost in some areas of the county! We usually only get cold spells like that for a few days in January.

This is supposed to be our Autumn or Fall weather time here, our Crape Myrtle, Hickory and Maple trees haven't even lost all their leaves yet!

there will undoubtedly be a spring swap or two... but I can't promise mugs for those, as we don't always organize gift tables (which is what we call our door prize table, since lots of people bring items and everybody goes home with one or more goodies!). If you come up, I'll make sure there's a prize for "longest distance traveled." LOL

Well, it sure would be lovely to visit Maryland and stop in at the next spring swap but unfortunately I wouldn't be able to make it this coming year. We are supposed to go to upstate N.Y. to visit my husband's elderly brother and sister in law early summer of 2009.

We hope to someday be able to make a trip to your part of the country though, we really want to go to Washington D.C. Being involved in the Aviation field, my husband wants to visit the Air & Space Museum and there are lots of other places I would love to see as well. My Mom was born and raised in D.C. but I haven't been up that way since I was probably five or six years old! I have some cousins who live in La Plata, Md. who I've never met and we have a niece who is in the Alexandria Va. area who we haven't seen in a few years.

There's a new aviation museum out near Dulles, also... You definitely need to make a trip up! We're about 20 or 30 minutes beyond the last metro stop, but that's close enough for guests here to make day trips to the DC mall. Just be sure to LMK when you're heading up this way! :-)

I'd love to meet you "in person"... I'm not sure how far you are from Frederick, but I've got a midwinter seed swap in the works (thinking last Sat. in Jan or first Sat. in Feb.), with lunch at a great Chinese buffet here in town like we did last Feb. :-)

Jill, you couldn't have summed up the DG experience any better! DG is a family, it is your best garden neighbor...it is a support group of its own. I for one found DG while searching where to find a particular plant. I have been here ever since. The warmth and geniuneness of the members is remarkable. As it has been said, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts..."

Jill, you are a leader of our community. You set high standards for yourself and us all. Your kindness is always appreciated (as well as those first basil seeds that you sent me asking for nothing in return!)

Finally, what a wonderful idea for a contact person to be listed on the person's page...I always wondered when I did not see a person "around" suddenly and/or a prolonged period of time; how could you know how they were or if they needed any help?...all I could think to do was to send a card of well wishes to their address, if in they were in the exchange, to see if all was ok. Having one person check would be less intrusive. Great article!

Thank you, my friend!

The "contact person" idea isn't one I came up with on my own... there was a thread in the DG forum where "emergency contacts" were being discussed, and this was the simplest solution to implement such a scheme. (I tried to find the thread so I could link to it, but the "search forums" feature is temporarily down.)

We do tend to drift into female type topics at times, but gents are always welcome on the "chatty" threads I've been in or in the chat room... just nudge your way into the conversation, and don't be afraid to chip in an "ahem... guy in the room... could you tone it down?" LOL I'm sorry you've felt awkward, and I'll try my best to make you feel more comfortable if you pop in someplace where I hang out. :-)
