I am waiting for bulbs to arrive from Brent and Becky's Bulbs. I could not resist their 50% off sale. I ordered an allium 'White Giant' and some dwarf, early spring blooming irises 'Katherine Hodgkin', danfordiae and 'Natascha'. I should know better but the lust was too great. It has been cold here and it is currently snowing so I will be hacking holes in the wet, semi-frozen ground. Hopefully they will survive this rude treatment and come up in the spring.

I'll bet they do fine! I've always figured bulbs expect to be frozen all winter, plus no worries about them getting confused and starting to come up in the fall, like I've had some earlier planted bulbs do!
Good luck with the hole hacking today!

HI, if you put down a black plastic bag or dark tarp, you might warm up the top soil layer to limit the initial hacking and save you some sore muscles. As for the bulbs, they will be fine.
