I remember that term being used as a kid in Wisconsin in the 50's. That is when most wives were "stay at homes". Coffee and home made coffee cake. I don't remember women getting together for coffee in California (SF Bay Area or Santa Barbara) as a kid in the 60's and certainly not now as most are out in the work force. I have seen more homes being built with front porches too, but never see anyone actually using them!. LOL. When my parents move to Danville, CA in '68, they lived on a cul-d-sac that was very social in the evening. That involved cocktails and not coffee and frequently they would "pool" their dinners at one home or another more than once a week in the warmer weather. They would then plan the weekend party!! They even went Trick or Drinking on Halloween and left their kids home alone!! I cannot believe it to this day.
Our cul-de-sac is a little less busy as the kids get older, but we've got a pretty active neighborhood... Still, I have DG "neighbors" I'm in much better day to day touch with, especially when winter drives us (mostly) inside. :-)
Your account makes me want to move to Danville, CA... but I'd probably need a time machine as well as a moving van!
This is true, as I sit here eating dinner at the computer. Today I spent more time reading threads about gardening and such than actually getting anything done. I finally went out and planted some more beets, peas, radishes, cabbage, spinach and broccoli, put some cutting in compost pile and raked and tossed some weeds. Big day tomorrow - might finally get some rain whoo - hoo.
