Many great ideas in this wonderful article! I will likely try some soon. This year I even planted some winterberries in my garden so that in the future when it matures I will have a ready source for them.
However... please, everyone, be aware that many species of clubmosses such as the Running Pine, and others which look very similar, are protected plants in a number of states. A number of species in this group are even threatened or endangered in various states. Running Pine itself is protected in New York State, for example, and if a state conservation officer catches you collecting them you will get fined "per plant". This family of plants do not survive transplanting due to complex associations they have with other organisms in their forest soils, and they don't regenerate very quickly, so picking a bunch for decorations can be hard on the local populations.
Sorry to be such a sour note in response to such a creative and inspiring article, but I think it is important to be aware of these local conservation issues. Any wild collection practices may run into issues such as this.
I always add the warning in my wild edibles articles, but I guess it needs to be added in all...PLEASE, always be 100% sure of what you are collecting when collecting in the wild...for eating, and for decorating!!
