Darius, I'm waiting to hear how you liked your Bourbon Red heritage turkey!

Enjoyed the article very much. I'm glad to learn more about our present store turkeys and the heritage breeds.

Thanks for the info!

I remember that the Pamunkey Indians pay tribute to the Govenor or Virginia each year with a Turkey or a Deer...

"ANNUAL POWHATAN PRESENTATION TO THE GOVERNOR This colorful ceremony takes place annually as Chiefs of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Reservations deliver tribute of turkey and deer to the Virginia Governor in payment for protection first provided by the British Crown. Governor's Mansion, Capitol Square, Richmond"

It's a public ceromony each year at the capitol. Jo

Well, mine is in the oven RIGHT NOW. I see MistyMeadows (who usually raises them) posted some quite different cooking times than what I read online. So at this point, it's anybody's guess, LOL.

Bev, verdict is in... the turkey was FANTASTIC!! Juicy, tender and extremely flavorful. I definitely will spend the money again for a heritage turkey. Kathy (MistyMeadows) told me they raise Slate Blue's, also very flavorful. I forget which other one (besides the Slate and Bourbon Red) is at the top of the list in flavor and tenderness.

Jo, I was unaware of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes, or of any reservations in VA, let alone the turkey presentation to the governor... shows how much I know about the state I live in!! My son's have relatives that live on the Mattaponi River in King William Co, VA. I bet they don't know either. Thanks for the information, I'll find out more about all this!

Darius, I'm glad to hear about your heritage turkey dinner being a success! I'll try to talk the guys into cooking one for next year... they really like the Butterballs though! I wonder how the heritage turkeys would deep fry?

Jo, I was unaware of them, too... just forgot to mention it in the glee of my turkey! I should look up where their reservations are...

Be, I'd think they would deep-fry just fine. Longer legs caused a bit of a problem for me.

The Mattaponi Reservation presently encompasses approximately 150 acres, a portion being wetland. Although the Tribal Roll numbers 450 people, only 60 actually live on the Reservation. The Mattaponi Indian Tribe is State recognized and continues to maintain its own Sovereign government. It's not far from Richmond, on the Mattaponi River.

The Pamunkey Indian Reservation is located on the Pamunkey River, adjacent to King William County, Virginia. A Virginia Historic Landmark, it contains approximately 1,200 acres of land, 500 acres of which is wetlands. Twenty-eight families reside on the reservation and many Tribal members live in nearby Richmond, Newport News, other parts of the States and all over the United States.

Well I hate that I didn't even know all this... thanks for educating me folks! Next time we're in the northern part of the state we'll have to check out the reservations, museums, stores, and anything else we can find about the Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes.

I love DG...

Bev...Don't look for them in the Northern part of Virginia...more like the Tidewater Area...take I-64 East past Richmond...then Rt 33 towards West Point. I used to live in Richmond and Virginia Beach...Jo

Jo, I'll check out all the particulars whenever we head to Richmond again. My husband goes to seminars up there every couple of years and we look for extra things to do to make it a mini weekend holiday.

Thanks again,
Bev

Update:
It seems my son's wise great-aunt educated them about the Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes during one of their visits with her. They have not visited the reservations or museums though, so there's a possible group educational adventure sometime in the future.

BTW, I just finished the last of our Thanksgiving turkey for lunch.

Thanks again for the info,

I know the older I get the more interested in history I become, or maybe that's just being nostalgic, lol.
