Does anyone know of an evergreen shade tree that grows around 11' tall (they can prune it). I haven't been able to find anything that fits the bill. I live in zone 9b.
Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) is a very nice choice, it's beautiful and also a CA native. But it doesn't like much summer water, so if you've got it in an area that has a lawn or garden beds that you irrigate frequently then I wouldn't recommend it. There are also a number of things that can either be large shrubs or small trees depending on how you prune them--Senna bicapsularis is a personal favorite of mine, it has gorgeous yellow blooms in late fall/winter so it gives you some color during a time when not much else is blooming. I have both the straight species with bright yellow flowers and the cultivar 'Worley's Butter Creme' which has creamy colored flowers. Photinia x fraseri is a more commonly grown one that will also get to that height. Or you might see if there's a cultivar of Arbutus unedo that could be kept in that height range.
Dale I really love that picture! I have a couple of Citrus trees that are still very tiny. I think I am going to try and train them into something like that.
