Are you familiar with goat's rue: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/111284/ ? I just bought one to plant in my Houston garden. I wondered about the connection with "rue the day". Thanks for enlightening me.

Hi Nick,

Nope, I've never heard of goat's rue. Seems to be a totally different plant from Ruta.

I think the "rue the day" usage came from Ruta's connection with sprinkling holy water while offering repentance in early Christian rituals.
