Last week my Jotul hit the "overfire" zone on our thermometer. My husband was working outside and I had just come home, so I don't know how long the stove was running this hot. Sometimes we use the ash tray door to get a good draft going. Well, the ash door was closed, but not tight. What should we be looking for in the way of damage that may have been caused?

What is the overfire temp for the stove itself? We have a thermometer we bought at the hardware store. According to the thermometer, "overfire" is anything over about 600 degrees. But, for our stove (a Vermont Castings), the manual says that over 750 is considered overfiring. We don't run it close to that high, of course, but if we went just by the thermometer, it might look like we're overfiring even when we're not.

As for damage, I'm not sure. Check with your stove dealer to see what they say.

We have a cast iron Lopi stove. We don't even have a thermometer. The instruction booklet said if the stove starts to glow shut the oxygen supply off. Then let it cool down. I've never had it hot enought to glow. That would be very scary. This is my 3rd year with it.

I would think maybe check for cracks and the gasket around the door. I agree with Gallesfarm, check with your dealer or go to Jotul's website and ask them.

Just had Jotul 500 Oslo installed along with new stainless steel chimney -- Can't seem to control the stove -- filled it about 60% full of wood the other night and let it get to 400 degrees--shut it up using front air flow lever along with damper in flu -- checked on it an hour later and it was up to 625 degrees -- instead of going down it went up when all closed up for the night --- anybody know why?? Ever had this problem with the Jotul??
