I recently obtained a hugh load of free mulch (chips) from a tree service. It is various size chips from green and brown trees they cut from the roadside. Is this material safe to place around vegetation and in areas I plan to plant shrubs and flowers?
I don't see why not. Around my area we have lots of black walnut trees along the roadsides and those aren't good for many garden flowers and shrubs even when they compost thoroughly. Of course, it's hard to know what's chipped up in your tree mulch, but you'd know if there were tons of black walnuts around the area.
This is the only place I've lived where tree mulch has been a problem. In other places I've lived, I have always been delighted to get that free mulch!
