I have seen granite tiles on countertops and there were no grout lines to see. Using other types of tile, ceramic or stone, how small a grout line? At a tile store last night and the guy said he uses 3/16 on his bathroom walls and 1/8 on the floor.
If you're using tiles in any place where water could be a problem, there should be enough of a grout line to seal the space between the tiles. It doesn't have to take too much-- your tile guy's recommendation sounds reasonable to me.
I used no grout at all between the granite tiles on our firplace hearth/seat, but there shouldn't be any problem with water/moisture there.
