All five of us children got an orange in our stocking at Christmas and a few other things,
but my brothers each got an additional item. Charles, the baby of the family, got a
small can of sliced pineapple. Whenwe divided a large can for dessert, he often came
up short and Santa noticed. Harry always got an onion as well as the orange. We
assumed it was because of his disposition. It was a family joke and Harry (now almost 75)
gets creamed onions for Christmas dinner regularly!
Hah, how funny! It was very kind of Santa Claus to bring Charles the extra pineapple, but you kids never felt he was being mean to Harry?
In my family, I would have been the one to get the onion, and I wouldn't have gotten the joke! I would have cried until the following Christmas, if I were a kid and Santa did that to me.
Unless of course, my little brother got the onion. . . He is always frowning in family pictures. Yes, he should get the onion, definitely, not me.
I think it's great that your family was able to laugh about stuff like that. We never discussed it. Santa (and my parents) were very egalitarian. It had NOTHING to do with whether you'd been bad or good, so we didn't need to watch out or be good for goodness sakes! I think our Santa was a Socialist. LOL.
