I never got an orange in my stocking, but we did make pomanders with oranges by sticking cloves in them and hanging the fruit with pretty ribbons tied around them to make a sort of sling or basket. We tied pomanders anywhere people would gather. The aroma was festive, and the orange tied with green and white ribbons was so beautiful, like the golden balls that St. Nick created for those poor girls in the story.
