Hello,

I am hoping you folks will help me solve this mystery.
We have a 4-5 years old ordinary (top load) GE washer. After every wash (after taking out the clothes) I see some strange ‘gunk’ pieces at the bottom/sides of the washer. It looks like large sand pebbles you see on the beach sometimes. They are soft to the touch and there no odor whatsoever. These can get to about a fingernail’s size.

My question is – what could that be?

Thanks

Could be a number of things.
Possibly detergent that's not dissolved if using powder.
Old lint that's trapped. Only the old style GEs have lint filters.
You may have washed a rug in the past, and some of that rubber backing may have came off, and got stuck in the tub.

It will help if there's a pic of the debris.

Sounds like lint to me too...my new Maytag doesn't have a lint trap...stupidest thing I've ever heard of...no lint trap!! sheesh.

Thanks for quick replies. It does not look like lint. I think detergent not getting dissolved is a good guess. Hmm...
The chunks are mushy to the touch and crumble easily (but they are not soapy, as detergent would be). Will try to snap some pics this weekend.

Sometimes crud (detergent scum) will build up on the outer tub, and will break off and get into the inner tub.
It will get not soapy when it crumbles.

Do you know how can I get rid of this? Thanks

You don't actually. Just keep cleaning the tub after washing or change your detergent.
I've been using liquid detergent, and that kept the cruds away.
Good luck!
