Beginner Vegetables: Container growing eggplant and squash in Hawaii

Author Content maui_gardengirl Kihei, HI (Zone 11) December 16, 2008 04:00 PM Post #5898523 My eggplant(blk beauty) produced 3 fruits only 4' diam and hard as a rock; skin has now gone from purple to yellow. My butternut squash has produced 2 fruits, 4" long and starting to turn from green to tan in color. Containers are 16" tall X 20" diam. I live on Maui at sea level. What am I doing wrong? Make sure they get plenty of reflected heat which should be easy to do if they are in containers. stellamarina Laie, HI January 20, 2009 06:06 PM Post #6029322 Eggplants seem to like additional mulch mounded over the roots every so often. Like to be fed a lot too. Mine seem to flush with flowers after I give them the cheapo HI fertiliser...10:30:10
