I tried this a few times with too-wet soil and of course got rotted leaves. I finally got one to sprout, and I was so proud...and it cooked in too sunny a spot. Whaaaaaa!

Definitely try again! I have good luck with soil that's barely moistened... if your leaf stays crisp, you know it's getting enough water. Keeping the leaf away from the surface of the soil and off the rim of the pot and other surfaces will also help prevent rotting. I've lost my share of leaves too, but you'll find a system that works for you. It's so rewarding when you see those little "ears!"
