I'm new to Dave's Garden and I was suprised to find a Home School thread in a plant forum. I've read thru most of the posts and feel more encouraged in taking over the kids schooling.

My Single, Daughter and her two teens live with me. There is a pink one - 14 going on 25, and a blue one - 15 of the "still waters run deep" , type. Both are ADHD to one extent or another and both are red/green color blind. The boy sees almost black and white and the girl is just weak when it come to red, pinks, purples and such.

Both had problems in our rural, small, school district and were put in classes that got extra help. I was horrified when I heard a teacher tell the child, "you should be reading something-or-other, but your in special ed. and can't do that. So, we will just redo this same chapter. The teachers were not willing to even explore any possibilities or "teach?".

We moved to the mainland and put the kids in regular school. Bullying, intimidation, disrespect of self and authority, etc. were all so prevelant it was frightening. And again the special ed. It seemed to me that once a child is labled "special ed", they become a greater revenue source for the school and are kept to a certain level to maintain that income level.

Here in Anacortes, WA we are fortunate to have a group called AHEP "Anacortes Home Education Project" They are a part of the local School Dist. but maintain a separate school site, have regular classes that are taught by real teachers. They use the Saxon Math books and several others I'm not as familiar with, but am learning. The Tutor we had for the kids has gone beyond her level of comfort ie: the high school levels, so we have taken over the tutoring and attending school with the kids. The people at the school have been very helpful and I hope they will continue.

I'll be keeping in touch with this thread for any new Idea's from you old timers.
