I did not realize the Christmas tree was originally a German tradition! Very informative article about it's origins! I didn't know the story about General George Washington's trick attack on the British Redcoats! Such interesting information! Thanks for sharing all of this with us, Carrie!
Carrie, your article resonated with me! Several years back, my wife wrote and produced a short opera, "Hanna Goodspeed", about one of the last English puritans. Her family (about 1748) wanted to adopt the Christmas tree custom but she thought it blasphemous. Needless to say, several attitudes were altered by the final scene. The libretto touched on much of the history you mentioned. I was thinking about that just last week when we cut down a Fraser fir I had planted seven years ago for our holiday tannenbaum.
Thank you, Don, and thank you, Becky and Lady, too! It is mostly amazing how much I had to omit from this article! That early puritans (the really rigid New England types) forbid celebrating Christmas at all, and worked, had school, commerce etc. December 25, and about the debate between artificial trees and natural trees and ... don't get me started! Thanks again for your comments.
