To start with I do not want to get into a debate. I am a Christian and without getting into a sermon, I need to share some truth with those who would seek it. The holiday of Christmas is not Biblical and unfortunately there is no set date for the birth of Jesus. I wish there was!
The acts of reverence to an evergreen tree started before Christ. It is written in God's Word that heathens (those who don't believe in God) worshiped the evergreen. Throughout the year they would take statues of their favorite gods to the groves and perform their many acts of worship there. One can read in Jeremiah 10 that they would also cut a tree down to bring to their house and fix it upright to adorn for worship. They probably would have put their statues within the tree to bring gifts to all of them. This would most likely have been the very roots of tree decoration and gift giving within the home and why it's considered blasphemous by Puritans. Although the holiday of Christmas is deceptively portrayed as being innocent and beautiful, there are many more ungodly facts to be aware of and most everything about it is based on heathen beliefs and practices.
As he lived, Jesus gave us an example of how we should live. Shalom
Thank you for your comment. Interestingly, that passage from Jeremiah is used both for and against Christmas tress! However, I tried to avoid taking a position one way or the other! I, too, wish to avoid a big debate here... I only wished to give some background of a secular American icon.
