Cedar18 wonders about uses for vellum papers, particularly painted vellums. I thought I'd start a new thread about the topic since I'm sure many, myself included, would like to see what other people have done with vellums.

I've used them, but don't have any photos or scans of my vellum projects handy. Vellum is fun to work with! Because it's translucent, you can layer it on top of patterned papers to give you different effects. Here are a few links to give you ideas until folks post some photos here.

Adhering vellum to your papers can be a challenge since it is translucent. Fastening vellum with brads or eyelets works well, and there are special adhesives for vellum, ranging from adhesive tape runners to sprays. There's a video on YouTube which addresses this issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9Zt6ZgP9WQ

Thanks for those links, Gwife. I enjoyed them and was inspired to go fondle my vellum. :)
I remembered one thing I've done was to put a piece over a poor quality photo. I wanted to use the pic because it showed my mother and I in matching outfits, but it was so out of focus-- so the vellum let the subject show through.

Perfect use for it, yes! I did that with some photos of magnolia leaves in my mom's front yard. I'll have to scan or photograph those layouts for this thread. Can you post yours?

We are 'between' digital cameras. Hope to get one after Christmas. Any recommendations? And I've never posted any pics of my layouts. I'm shy... well, not really, but possibly so about showcasing my questionable SB 'talent.'

No one else but us in the DG world interested in vellum? Or is everyone busy doing holiday things? Which I should be, but am not up to it somehow. Had to go with my mom yesterday to have her cat put to sleep and then DH buried him. Then an emergency trip to the dentist this morning for me. I'm just blah.

This forum isn't terribly busy. The best we can do is spread the word, I guess! :) If you're looking for a camera, I suggest you post on the Camera Talk forum and tell what you're looking for in a camera -- if you are a beginner, enthusiast or expert, if you want a point-and-shoot or a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses, etc.

I bet your talent's a lot better than you think!

I made this card this year. The overlay is a velum that has fuzzy white trees on it. The card was simple and easy to make, yet had an elegant look to it with the velum.

Here is another technique I did with vellum. I forget what it is called though. Jeannie, are you out there reading this? Do you recall what this was called?

sjweld, very nice. On the 2nd card, are the flowers embossed and painted on the vellum? I really like the idea of softening a die cut with the vellum as you did with the tree. Thanks for sharing.

The coloring is done on the back side of the vellum, yes. The embossing was also done from the back side (I think).

I hadn't thought about doing reverse painting on vellum. That's beautiful!

I am thinking we used water color pencils and a blender pen to color the back side of the image.
Here is the card Jeannie made using the same technique:
