Carrie, I prefer your "Tannenbaum" version of how the fir tree became a Christmas tree. Although Cambium's biblical version also rings with truth, I don't want to think of heathens and pagans when I see a Christmas tree come alive with lights, and baubles, surrounded by gifts.
But the real truth of the matter is I, like you, took German 101. The people, their folklore, and their language fascinated me. Also, in my childhood, I learned much about them from a German POW. Before I could turn around, I had graduated with a German major.
Danke, Carrie, für das Vergnügen des Ablesens solch eines interessanten Artikels.
Oh, mwperry, I was this close to being a German major in college, but Music was singing more loudly. Now my two kids are in a French immersion program in our town (grades 1 - 12) and mysteriously, my HS French has returned and my German has mostly gone out the other ear! But I do enjoy learning other languages and word origins. Thank you for writing!
