An important article for everyone to read from Liz Pulliam Weston, MSN Money, published Dec. 29, 2008. Fair Isaac is changing the way it scores consumer credit accounts:

Just a side note, everyone can get a free copy of their credit report once a year. you usually have to pay a fee to get your actual score, but you can check your report for errors, suspicious activity, false reports, or to see if information is up to date. Also if you have a problem with something on your report or have questions about it, you can call the company.

To clarify something in FrillyLily's post:

The "credit scores" sold by the 3 credit agencies are NOT Fair Isaac scores. They are proprietary algorithms developed by the individual credit agencies, but they are not used by financial institutions in rating creditworthiness.

A person's credit score will fluctuate naturally as credit card balances are paid off, incurred, or maintained.

You can get a free credit report once a year from each of three credit agencies: Equifax, Transunion, and Experian. Be wary of sites that offer to "help" get your reports and credit scores for a "minor" fee of $29.95 or similar. The official website to get a truly free report from all three agencies is:
[HYPERLINK@www.annualcreditreport.com]

If you are turned down for credit by any financial institution, they MUST give you a copy of your credit report and score, by law.
