Is this the reason why it's called the Jack-O-Lantern? Because I thought there were much more disturbing folk tales (possibly true) about the origin of candle-lit gourds.

Could just be my imagination though =P

Yes this is the reason we call them Jack-o-Lanterns.

There are a lot of stories out there but this is close to the most favored and traditional of them all.
