I have observed with the cat herd that some seem to have the "catnip gene" and some don't?

At the moment, I have one that is mad for fresh only... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/607802/

One that will kill for dried catnip and three that think those two are nutso!

Interesting article again ~ guess I just have the "cat gene". Thanks! pod

Thanks for an interesting read. I've often wondered why my two cats have little or no interest in The Nip.

I have an orange and white kitty. She's the LEAST friendliest cat I've ever had. A Humane Shelter rescue. She's beautiful, but not the lap kitty I had thought she was going to be.

When we visited with her before adopting her, she was VERY lovable. Now she only shows her love by nipping and scratching my heels as I walk by her. She doesn't like to be petted or rubbed under the neck/chin or even around her ears. Instead she tries to bite us! Yikes! I don't know what caused the personality change. She is well loved here despite her less than congenial attitude. I wonder if catnip would make her nicer?

She is an indoor cat only. I think she used to be a stray. Maybe she bites me because she wants to be outdoors. She hangs out on the screened in porch daily and watches all the birds (at the feeder) and catches lizards and bugs and plays with them. She quite the hunter!

Are orange and white cats supposed to be "different" in some way than other cats. When we took her to the vet for her first checkup, the vet commented on her attractiveness and said most orange and whites are males. What's the scoop on that? Please someone dmail me about this or point me to a thread.

Now that I am totally off track to the topic ...

Loved the article and especially the adorable photos! Thanks the great article!

So ... where can I get some seeds for this interesting plant? Anyone care to share or trade with me? Hee, hee ...

My sister's DOGS love catnip! They own a dog toy store and inspect all the shipments and can tell in an instant when the shipment has catnip in it. (She buys toys for friends and her sister's cats.) If catnip ever becomes a "controlled" substance - she has the drug sniffing dogs all trained! LOL!

My cat likes catnip too.
Almost all calico cats are female and it seems that more of the white and orange ones are male.

I too think there is a 'gene'. I have had cats that are totally disinterested and others that are insane about it. I find the same with cat mint. I accidently discovered that my current cat goes ballistic over coriander seed. I don't give it to him though as I can find no information about its effects on cats and research being done on it regarding insulin and fatty acids makes me think its not a good thing for a healthy cat.

Another herb that acts as an attractant is Valerian. The shop cat Scraps goes bonkers over it and it smells to me like stinky socks. I was also given a start of lemon catnip. I found my catnip mad girlie likes it too. Just not as well as normal catnip.

No, Sugarlips has to settle for an occasional catnip bag from Petsmart. But I perhaps I will grow some this summer. Pod, may you have the best of 2009. ((hugs))

Sugarlips and I think you need to grow him a pot of cat "pot" this summer ~LOL Actually he may be like our cat at work. He only cares for it dried. Have missed you lately ~ sending our best wishes to you and Sugarlips for the new year ahead! 8 )

My Big Bad Baby Twinkle would get violent when I Nipified her. However, it only happened when Princess was also nearby (and rolling on the floor in a giddy silly Nip-induced Haze)

POOR PRINCESS!!! Needless to say, I separated those two when I 'Nipified them again.

LOL ~ all catters are different when it comes to their catnip pleasures. Great fun. I know when Scraps gets his dry, I stand back for a little bit. He is a docile guy and becomes quite fiesty. Great fun.

Fiesty Scraps! lol

Sugarlips tries to rub his cheeks on his dry, only to get it all over his face, which makes him rub his cheeks all the more. More determined, he bites it. Now is that smart?? lol

I sprinkle loose catnip on a glass top counter. Scraps sniffs it and sneezes which spreads it. Then he flops and rolls over and over in it. What a royal mess. We don't do that too often.

People who don't have the "cat gene" would think we are all nutso! LOL Probably including the good Dr that started this discussion! 8 )

Martha ~ if we are wacko, we consider ourselves normal, do we not? LOL Sorry, I was just reflecting on it.
