My parents have lived in Tampa Florida for the last 40 years and at one point my father grew them. They were not old enough to flower yet and he was having a difficult time waiting for them to bloom. One day my mother played a trick on him: She went out and bought plastic Bird's of Paradise flowers and stuck them in the plants. He came inside all excited because his plants had bloomed ahead of schedule. It took him several days to forgive my mom! They finally bloomed on their own about two years later. It was certainly worth the wait though.
