I have some newly Birds of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) in my yard and we got hit with tempatures at night in the mid 20's. The leaves all browned, but the base of the plant is green. Will it survive? Do I cut it back when the tempatures warm up again? I live in zone 8b.
My Strelitzia is doing just fine, just a little bit of frost, but still looks really good.
I found that here in Sarasota Florida that when it gets cold and the outer leaves brown, it is best to leave them to help keep the whole plant warm and safe for future cold snaps. When the cold weather is gone, then cut it back.
