Thanks for the comprehensive look at nitrogen and how it figures in our gardening efforts. One additional facet to consider, and one that affects many gardeners, is the proper use of fertilizer in containerized plants. This can be a sticky wicket because, unlike soil, the pot environment is by no means a natural one, and I have grave doubts about whether a potted plant can ever be grown "naturally".. I think the jury will be out for a while on what the best approach is for culture of plants in pots. One strong possibility is the use of carefully (read: responsibly) designed timed-release products that vary in their delivery both with moisture and with temperature, and thus do not leach out into the environment. An idea for an article here - yours or mine?

Thanks, LA... I hadn't even thought about fertilizing containers, mainly because I plant so few of them.

Argh Darius you might be messing with my amendment plan. :-) Thanks for stirring the mix with another great article to make me re-think my garden's needs. I so agree with you LariAnn regarding container plantings.
