With a little time on my hands (never enough during the growing season), I'm trying dormant cuttings of several shrubs. Last winter was a depressing failure because I didn't know to give the cuttings a cold rest before rooting. With the exception of Ilex, new cuttings are all bundled and nestled safely in my refrigerator for the next few months. I'm trying to get info on how to treat the dormant Ilex ('Blue Boy' and 'Blue Girl') cuttings because they fall in the category of broad-leaved evergreens and all of my other cuttings are deciduous. I have heat mats but I'm not sure if my greenhouse is cool enough (50 - 55 deg except on sunny days when it's warmer) to start rooting the Ilex cuttings. My only cold frame is full of potted shrubs and perennials and it doesn't necessarily stay above freezing. Digging a hole to stash the cuttings in the garden is not feasible with frozen ground. I should have thought of cuttings a few months ago when the ground wasn't frozen. Has anyone had any experience with Ilex or suggestions? Sure would appreciate any advice.
