Request for new forum: "Kiln-Fired Arts (clay, glass, etc.)"

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

HI DG staff:

There has been a lot of enthusiasm expressed by a fair number of users in support of this new forum. As we discussed the idea among ourselves, we decided that the original request for a Pottery and Ceramics forum might be too narrow. We want to include discussions of fused glass work, copper enameling, and any other art/craft form that uses a kiln. Several of us have participated in discussions in other forums (Artisans, Trash to Treasure, Mosaics and Stained Glass for example) where people are looking for information about how to buy and use a kiln for different types of projects.

Often the postings I've seen in other forums start out with "I'm not sure if this is the place to post, but...."

Here are some of the threads I've found where either support has been shown for this new forum, or there have been posts about kiln-related work:

Hopefully there's enough here to warrant a new forum where we can have a home of our own, and where users with questions about these art forms would quickly find a place to pose their questions!

Thanks for your consideration,

Janet

Please count me in also, I've purchased a kiln and it has been sitting there for a couple of months, almost a year because I really don't have the whole picture on firing it up in my brain, it would be great to have some kindred spirits in this arena. Thank you ... this is very exciting.

Here are links to threads I started in three other forums asking if the users would support this new forum.

Trash to Treasure:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/940909/

Mosaics and Stained Glass:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/940912/

Artisans:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/940911/

Interestingly, as of this posting, there has been no response in Artisans, but quite a bit of activity in the other two. I think this is an indicator that the Artisans forum has a very different audience than some of the others!

I just put one of my ramblings on the original request here it is.

I think threads will come along as people have questions make something new want to share information. As far as a list of topics there are very many it would be hard to make a list. In sculpting for instance, joining two pieces, coil, slab, carving, shape, form, on and on and that could go for many of the above.

glazing: recipes, application, mixing, deciding which to use for a project, brainstorming what went wrong, temperature etc.

Somehow I missed the comment from Terry about if clay dominated the artisans forum then we would get a forum of our own. Isn't one of the problems that because there isn't a clay forum people end up going to various forums depending on what the use of the object is?

There are a variety of forums where clay work could and does pop up such as; landscaping, container gardening, garden art, garden design, indoor gardening and house plants, rock and alpine gardening, crafts and decorating, mosaics, artisans, I could go through the whole list of forums and add more.

Until this came up I hadn't a clue how many people on Dave's garden there were that were interested in clay. For the most part I have just gone to another web site with questions about clay because it didn't seem like there was a place.

I am going on and on here. What I really want to say if we don't have our "own" forum then it would mean constantly going from forum to forum to see who was out there. Have you ever done a search for clay on DG? Try one.

To all of you who have added your names/voices here...

We have several threads started in Artisans and quite a few people who would like discussions. PLEASE take time to check and chime in or add an idea for a discussion you would like to have input on...I am very interested in everything but am also a rank beginner -I could flood the forum and bore you all to tears. I'm linking Ima's thread here as a good place to go.... And remember there is also interest in glass work, enameling and other mixed applications...
