I live in Mobile, Alabama and we've had a fairly mild winter with very freezing nights. My big, beautiful impatiens, of course, withered into dead, tarantula-like stalks with the first freeze.
But a month later, when about to remove the "dead' plant from the pot, I found that the roots and base of the plant are still succulently green inside. I pared off the "dead" stalks...now I'm curious as to whether these will grow back in the spring, and if so, will they be as vigorous as last years?
