Hi. I'm new to the forum; live outside San Diego, Ca. love to garden but somewhat limited. Confined to a wheelchair, but garden in a raised flowerbed and in patio plants. I absolutely love the miracle of gardening; however, not everything turns out, so I will welcome the help. Thanks
Can I start off with a question about some beautiful African Violets I have; some are really big and all have been healthy looking. Suddenly one started having drooping leaves, more and more every day until we're getting down to the crown. The other's aren't so bad yet, and one is not affected at this time. I took them out of the pots and checked for crown rot, but the stems are still firm and there is root system. I don't know if the roots are supposed to be white, but they aren't. Tomorrow I plan to repot them in new soil. Can anyone tell me what might be going on? And what should I do after I repot them in new soil...add anything? Thanks

Mine did that. I don't know what was happening to it. I took 6 leaves off of it and started them and they look GREAT. The mother plant died of whatever it was sick with.
How do you water your AV's? I know they don't like having water splashed on the leaves, so if you've been watering from above and water's gotten on the leaves that might be causing problems.
I started using self-watering pots for my AVs a couple of years ago and they work great. I found mine at Wal Mart. I notice our Wal Mart here is beginning to put out all their house plants and flower pots so I'd bet they are out where you live too.
Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I have read all my gardening books, (and the link you gave was interesting.) I always water from the bottom, and have not changed anything from what I've done in the past. Did I mention that some of the leaves just on the edges turn black?
That sounds like too much water--I'd start doing the "finger test" before you water them to make sure it's not still wet from the last watering. Or else get one of the self-watering pots, a lot of people use those for AV's and are very happy with them.
